Last night Amanda Verga, Cat Rania, Jillian Tierney led by Nathaniel Kirby brought forth a compelling and articulate case for the protection of the environment to the Rockport Town Meeting. The regulations passed last night state that, “No food establishment, retail establishment, or beverage provider within the Town of Rockport shall use, provide, distribute, or sell plastic straws and/or stirrers.” The new regulations also states that, “Thin-film single use plastic bags shall not be distributed to customers or sold at any retail establishment in the Town of Rockport.”  There are exceptions for certain foods that require thin plastics like meat and fish and for articles like newspapers and dry cleaning bags. In addition, for those people with a disability or other physical condition that require a straw will also be allowed.

There were very few dissenters.  In fact, one townsperson recommended banning even the excepted items!  The article passed with 89% for and only 11% against.
