The last Thursday before Spring Break featured the first Earth Day Symposium ever hosted at RHS.  Students from Eric Sabo’s Environmental Science class contributed posters on the myriad environmental challenges that we currently face.  These include the plastics polluting our oceans and the pesticides poisoning our vital pollinators.  Environmental solutions were presented as well, including the replacement of our runaway consumerism with a more “circular economy” along with the nutritious foods being grown sustainably in our greenhouse and planter beds by the RHS Green Team.  Research studies of wind turbine designs and the viability of plants in extremely low-pressure environments (e.g. on Mars) were also featured.  Many of these poster presentations will be shown again at the Congregational Church as part of the RPS Gives Back event in downtown Rockport the evening of April 25.  A slide show in the John E. Lane Auditorium highlighted the greenhouse warming of Earth in the context of similar warming activity on Mars and Venus.  This year’s pilot Earth Day Symposium culminated with the showing of Sophia Orlando’s animated video that won an award as part of the LWV Statewide Climate Change Video Contest.  Official Earth Day occurs Monday, April 22 with Town-wide activities that will take place in the morning prior to the Town Meeting in the RMHS gymnasium.

Students in Nathan Cohen and Soni Razdan’s music class took part in viewing the posters and tasting nutritious refreshments.
