At the dawn of the new decade, I am delighted to note that the Rockport Community Observatory project has received an anonymous gift amounting to $10,000.  With this gift, we will have received donations exceeding $40,000 of the $60,000 estimated to build, electrify, and outfit the observatory.  The plan is to build a domed telescopic observatory structure along with a heated control center nearby.  The two structures will be assembled on top of a stiff concrete pad which will guarantee steady viewing through the research-class reflecting telescope.  We foresee siting the observatory just south of the tennis courts on the RPS campus – near the famous gaga pit – where the light pollution is blessedly low.  Students will help with assembling the observatory and, later on, running public star parties in partnership with school faculty and members of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club.

This ambitious project began in summer 2016, when a private citizen living in Newburyport offered RPS the telescope and fiberglass dome.  We are now tantalizingly close to achieving our goal of providing direct telescopic access to myriad wonders of the night sky.  Thank you to all our donors!  These include the Institution for Savings, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Cape Ann Community Foundation, Educational Foundation for Rockport, our anonymous donor, and other generous citizens.  We encourage further donations to meet our projected funding goal.  We are now so close!  Please see http://rockportedfoundation.org/ for information on donating.
